Burger King Veggie Burger

Wow! Burger King with a Veggie Burger? Well, I was curious if this burger patty was any good for your health. Luckily BK has their menu info online.

The first ingredient list is for the patty, straight off their website:

Vegetables (Mushrooms, Water Chestnuts, Onions, Carrots, Green Bell Peppers, Red Bell Peppers, Black Olives)
Textured Vegetable Protein (*1) (Soy Protein Concentrate, Wheat Gluten, Water for hydration)
Egg Whites
Cooked Brown Rice (Water, Brown Rice)
Rolled Oats
Corn Oil (*1)
Calcium Caseinate (*2)
Soy Sauce (*1) (Water, Soybeans, Salt, Wheat)
Onion Powder
Corn Starch (*1)
Salt
Hydrolyzed Corn (*1)
Soy (*1) and Wheat Protein
Autolyzed Yeast Extract (*2)
Natural Flavors (*2) from non-meat sources
Sugar (*1)
Soy Protein Isolate (*1)
Spices
Garlic Powder
Dextrose
Jalapeño Pepper Powder
Celery Extract (*3)

Beyond these ingredients, they add the following to the burger:
A Bun (with enriched white wheat)
Mayo (*1 likely contains soybean oil from GMO soy)
Lettuce
ketchup (*1 likely contains sugar in the form of HFCS)
tomato

I’ve added my key to this list with the (*1), (*2), and (*3).

(*1) means that this ingredient is most likely from GMO sources. Almost all the corn, soy, and sugar is from GMO sources. Do we really want to eat GMO ingredients?
(*2) is most likely a form of MSG. Manufacturers are now starting to hide MSG by calling it different things, since we’re on to MSG as a bad excitotoxin.
(*3) is a form of Nitrites. Instead of adding Sodium Nitrite, they use this “friendly sounding ingredient” to hide it’s badness.

I’m sorry I don’t have a picture of one of these sandwiches as I can’t bring myself to even step foot in a BK restaurant. But one can say that I won’t be going there for one of these burgers anytime soon.

As a last step to this post, here’s some baby steps to eating healthier.
